The Most Wonderful Time for Walnut Creek Saves

Written by: Anna Meehan

As the holiday season comes to a close, I want to reflect on our successes from the numerous holiday-themed events Walnut Creek Saves attended. In the community, Walnut Creek Saves works to reduce the water and energy consumption of residents to ultimately help them save money on their bills each month. We attend outreach events around the community in the hopes of receiving sign-ups for our free in-home consultations.

Recently, I worked at the Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights in the middle of downtown Walnut Creek. The event was a major success for all groups participating and every attendee enjoyed the holiday festivities. There was live music, dancing, a festive parade featuring clubs, volunteer groups and other local organizations in Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek Saves set up a booth close to the large Christmas tree. We decorated our table with garland, glitter and fairy lights! We had a prize wheel with water and energy trivia, and we were giving out a variety of sweets and candy canes for all to enjoy.

Ultimately, WCS received a few sign-ups, but the most important thing the attendees gained was knowledge about our program. I was able to connect with many residents and provide tips for saving water and energy around the home and in the yard. Many people had not heard of our beneficial savings program and we handed out countless flyers to raise awareness. The event was entertaining and it served as an amazing outreach event.

A few weeks later I tabled with my fellow Conservation Coaches at the Shadelands Museum. Over a span of two weekends, the Shadelands Museum hosted their annual Holiday Faire, where vendors from across Northern California came and sold merchandise from sweaters and purses, to candies and pencils. We set up our table right outside and spoke with many passersby who were shopping at the faire. Our prize wheel was popular with both children and adults and after they claimed their candy prizes, we informed them all about our program.

The holidays served as a very busy and successful time for Walnut Creek Saves as we accumulated many sign-ups and spoke to many residents!
