Walnut Creek Saves – Not just a Program
Are your utility bills becoming more and more expensive? Are you looking for ways to save money? Well, I have a solution! Walnut Creek Saves is a non-profit, City-sponsored program that helps Walnut Creek residents save money on their energy and water bills. Contrary to popular belief, we do not use your tax dollars to fund our program; instead, we use federal grants that the City received.
Our job is to educate the public about their energy and water consumption, and provide suggestions for savings. One way we do this is by attending several community outreach events. During these events we ask trivia questions to show the importance of conservation. One of the most popular questions at our outreach events is about water consumption. Did you know that less than 1% of Earth’s water is drinkable??
In addition to the fun trivia questions, we provide free home energy and water consultations. They are completely free, safe and it gives high school students, like me, a chance to gain valuable work experience.
The home consultations are scheduled on your own time; meaning that we will comply with your busy schedule. During the consultation, high school students plus our manager, assess your home’s water and energy usage and provide personalized reports about your energy and water usage. The report shows you where you can save the most energy and water.
In addition to the consultation, we will help you create a free online energy-saving account called EnergyCenter. With EnergyCenter, you can track your energy consumption online. We will link your PG&E account to EnergyCenter so you can see where you can save on a monthly basis.
Although you may think your contribution to our program won’t make a big difference in your monthly bills, your involvement will absolutely help the planet out.
Currently, Earth’s resources are being used at a rate much faster than the Earth could provide. Animals are becoming extinct at a rate of 200 to 2,000 a year due to human activities. By signing up for a home consultation, you can reduce your carbon footprint on this Earth. It might not seem like a lot but big things start small!
What Walnut Creek Saves means to me is an opportunity to help both the community and the environment. Today, people could care less about the environment; people forget to turn off their hoses or forget to turn off their lights. This could exhaust our resources, causing the next generation to live with limited resources. The importance of conservation is extremely important. If we don’t care about the Earth now, we will have no home in the future.
